Portable Power

Portable Power

When disaster strikes or the power goes out, how can we keep the lights on? In the Portable Power module, students take on the role of engineers tasked with designing a portable power device. Along the way, they’ll investigate the science behind energy resources and their real-world applications—deepening their understanding of core grade 6–8 science concepts, including:

  • Matter & Energy—Properties of renewable, nonrenewable, and perpetual energy sources
  • Scientific Inquiry—Research, data evaluation, and engineering design
  • Environmental ImpactEnergy resource sustainability and pollution

This collection was created in collaboration with JASON Learning and Region 4 Education Service Center located in Houston, Texas (TX).

Included Materials

Students gain access to a module featuring an integrated STEM design challenge aligned with middle school science content. This resource includes structured guidance through each phase of the Engineering Design Process: Ask, Imagine, Plan, Create/Improve, and Evaluate/Communicate.

The challenge is designed to be completed over multiple class periods and encourages student collaboration and real-world problem-solving. Students will explore career paths in civil, electrical, and environmental engineering as they analyze different energy sources and build a functional prototype.
