Cool under pressure! In this hands-on science and engineering module, students in Grades 3–5 take on a real-world challenge: design a storage device that keeps vaccines cold and safe for delivery. Through a guided, age-appropriate Engineering Design Process (EDP), students explore the physical properties of materials, states of matter, and the science of heating and cooling—all while developing teamwork, communication, and problem-solving skills.
With clear facilitation strategies, sentence stems, and support for diverse learners, this challenge supports science content standards while fostering creativity and engineering thinking. Students will investigate global issues around vaccine distribution and learn how science and innovation intersect to solve pressing problems.
