Welcome to SPARK: Setting Pathways that Activate Real-world Knowledge

We are in the midst of the fourth Industrial Revolution (Industry 4.0), driven by advanced technological tools like artificial intelligence (AI), the Industrial Internet of Things (IIOT), additive (3D) manufacturing, autonomous robots, augmented reality, data analytics, nanomanufacturing, and more. The field of Advanced Manufacturing is at the center of innovation, providing exciting career opportunities in designing, building, and maintaining the devices and infrastructure that support our ever-changing world. What skills do students need to launch a career in Advanced Manufacturing? Ignite their curiosity and find out!

Included Materials

Module 1: Enhancing with Peripherals
In this module, learners explore how products are designed and redesigned to meet the needs and wants of users. Watch your students engage with the Engineering Design Process, discover the importance of measurement in creating prototypes, and consider how the materials you choose affect the product outcome and the environment. Then, students will use their newfound knowledge to enhance a product in their community!

Module 2: Cultivating the Digital Thread
In this module, students explore design constraints, considerations, and expectations in the manufacturing industry. Their final challenge is to reverse engineer an existing advanced manufacturing product and create a conceptual Technical Data Package.

Module 3: Fabricating Composite Materials
From the mundane to the extraordinary, many objects made using advanced manufacturing processes are composite products. Movie props are often especially creative composite products that contain a multitude of components and materials. In Fabricating Composite Products, students will examine movie props, learn how they are made, and fabricate a prototype composite product of their own!

Module 4: Monitoring Production & Quality
What is the lifecycle of a product, and how can it be analyzed and improved to protect human health, the environment, and sustainable economic practices? Using Industry 4.0 technologies to optimize production processes is essential for a brighter future on this planet — and beyond. Students apply their knowledge to revise an existing product for use in colonizing the Moon and/or Mars.
